I heard about Duncan long before I met him, whilst trying to coax details from my Mum about what Caz’s new boyfriend was like. Despite catching him slightly unaware, she told me that Duncan came straight up to her and gave her a beaming smile and a handshake – she was incredibly impressed! He came down to Winchester on various occasions, and made the very same impression on me and the rest of my family. I remember when he stayed for a week in the summer: it must have been daunting enough to meet the parents let alone the grandparents, the sisters and the sister’s boyfriend’s – but he was just so very easy to like: he had such a gentle, fun air about him. For some reason we were obsessed with the game Rummicub that summer, and he even willingly joined in on our rather sad and highly competitive tactics in the sunshine outside, as well as risking my driving to come bowling with us all. I couldn’t speak more highly of the guy: he blended so well into our family; everyone loved him. I loved the way he was with Caz – always unconsciously affectionate and effortlessly genuine. The love that he generated in other people was easy to see, both in my sister and in the hundreds of his friends that flocked to show their respect and love for him and for his parents at his funeral. It has shaken our whole family, and I truly hope that Barry, Norma and Craig manage to find some kind of solace in each other as a way though this most crazy of accidents. I didn’t know whether I should write a message or not, as I met Duncan only a few times but as everyone says, they were enough – my love to his family and his friends – you have been amazing.
