I wasn't sure whether I should write anything, as I never really got to know Duncan. We played a few games together in Inter Hyogo, saw each other at the odd beer garden or pub, and were on the same flight back to Japan from England (along with half the British Jet population) barely a month ago, where we rolled our eyes at each other at the prospect of returning to work in Japan. But I wanted to say how much I wanted to get to know Duncan better. He was one guy on the football that I really wanted to sit down and have a few beers with, but never managed to. The secret to the outstanding success of InterHyogo (apart from having lots of decent players like Duncan and not so many useless ones like me!) is communication. Everybody on the team is very good at telling each other what to do, where to be, and who to mark. But Duncan was the best at telling people when they'd done something right, and offering encouragement to those for whom the game was a bit of a struggle. Like me. So, anyway, my best memory of Duncan from the short time that I knew him will always be his voice calling out from the back line - "That's good cover Chris!" Cheers Duncan. Thanks a lot. |
